Trudeau’s Second Carbon Tax to sting drivers at the pumps starting Canada Day
Toronto – Canadian drivers will be hit with another tax as they head into Canada Day and the summer months.
Starting July 1, the Trudeau government’s “Clean Fuel Regulations” (CFR) will act as another Carbon Tax on top of the existing Carbon Tax. And this will cost drivers big bucks by 2030.
Estimates show that the CFR will raise gasoline prices between six and 17 cents a litre by 2030 and will significantly lower the gasoline mileage on vehicles. This is because ethanol will be blended into gasoline, lowering the fuel efficiency in vehicles.
“Consumers should brace themselves for worse gas mileage starting Canada Day thanks to the ethanol that will be blended into their gasoline, while Atlantic Canadians will see refiners pass on the full cost of compliance,” says Dan McTeague, President of Canadians for Affordable Energy.
The impact will be felt beyond the pumps too. A recently published report from LFX Associates, authored by economist Ross McKitrick, estimates that household energy costs will increase by 2.2 to 6.5% a year per household. This will also mean an extra tax of $1,277 a year per worker by 2030.
“This is yet another blow to consumers from the Trudeau government who are totally out of touch with the struggles of Canadians,” McTeague added. “This tax couldn’t come at a worse time. High energy costs, soaring inflation, and a slowing economy are making it hard for Canadians to make ends meet. Instead of backing down on the first punitive Carbon Tax, the Trudeau government is doubling down and adding another.”
Keeping energy services affordable must be an ongoing public policy priority for all levels of government. Founded in 2016, Canadians for Affordable Energy is a not-for-profit organization committed to speaking out on this issue of so there is an informed debate, and the interests of all Canadians are heard. It is led by Dan McTeague who served as a Member of Parliament for 18 years.
