Don’t block energy exports to the U.S.

Since the U.S. started to threaten Canada with tariffs, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the majority of Canada’s premiers have reiterated that “everything is on the table” as a retaliatory measure – including cutting off energy exports to the U.S.
This so-called “Team Canada” approach is short-sighted and unfairly targets Canada’s energy sector.
Alberta and its oil and gas industry is Canada’s largest export to the U.S. – worth about $125 billion in 2023. Four million barrels of oil flow to the U.S. every single day.
A massive tariff on energy exports would hurt not only Americans but Canadians as well.
The price of Canadian oil will drop significantly.
Companies will immediately pull back production.
The Canadian economy will take months, if not years, to recover from this decision.
Only Alberta Premier Danielle Smith seems to realize how important the oil and gas industry is – and yet she’s being chastised by the media and other politicians.
But Smith asks some very important questions to consider.
Why isn’t our “Team Canada” approach focused on avoiding the tariffs altogether?
Why aren’t we addressing the issues the U.S. is focused on – national security, the fentanyl crisis, and border security?
Why aren’t we more focused on getting more energy projects built so we’re less reliant on the U.S.?
Cutting off energy exports to the U.S. is a reckless and knee-jerk reaction by our politicians.
