Tell Ottawa: keep the gas tax off
Prime Minister Carney has delayed the return of the federal gas tax — but he hasn’t scrapped it.
The government was preparing to bring the federal fuel excise tax back on September 8, adding 10 cents per litre to gasoline and 4 cents per litre to diesel. After pressure from Canadians struggling with high costs, Ottawa backed away and extended the suspension until January 31, 2027.
But Canadians shouldn’t have to keep waiting for temporary relief.
The government itself has acknowledged that suspending the tax helps people cope with high fuel prices. Yet instead of eliminating the tax, Ottawa continues to treat affordability as a temporary problem and keeps the threat of higher taxes hanging over drivers.
Families are still paying more for groceries, transportation and everyday necessities. Rural Canadians, shift workers, small businesses and anyone who depends on a vehicle feel those costs especially hard.
A few more months without the tax does not fix the problem. It only postpones it.
Canadians need permanent relief — not another temporary extension.
